Situated along the riverbanks of Gongguan is the “Treasure Hill Artist Village (THAV).” Its historical lineage not only encompasses the city-designated historic site, Treasure Hill Temple, but also broadly refers to the historic settlement that sprawls out from the vicinity of this temple.  This settlement is mainly formed by unauthorized constructions from the 60s and 70s.  These structures, built alongside the mountain and by the water, are intricately intertwined and convoluted, showcasing a unique Taiwanese settlement appearance.  In July 1980, Treasure Hill was formally designated by the Taipei City Government as urban planning park No. 297, situated adjacent to the water source protection zone, putting the area under the imminent threat of  demolition. Consequently, activists and cultural history groups spearheaded a series of preservation movements.  In 1999, during her tenure as the Director General of Taipei City’s Department of Cultural Affairs, Lung Ying-Tai proposed the concept of an artist village as the future developmental trajectory for Treasure Hill, paving the way for the eventual establishment of the Artist Village.  Leveraging its unique geographical setting and settlement ecosystem, an arena for ecological, artistic, and community dialogues was conceived under the theme of “paragenesis.”

2025 Treasure Hill Artist Village Light Festival will feature the theme “趖 sô” and will invite more then ten groups of artist, along with nearby schools and community organizations, to engage in a collaborative exploration of Taipei’s Treasure Hill Artist Village through visual and performing arts.  The event will encourage participants to explore the area at a leisurely pace, either by walking or sitting.  The term “趖” in Taiwanese signifies a slow and relaxed tempo. Through this theme, the festival aims to re-examine Treasure Hill, one of Taipei’s earliest settlements, and reflect on the enduring traces of life that have withstood the test of time.
